Top 10 Worst Halo Missions

1. Lone Wolf – Halo Reach (1/10)

Is it fair to put this as number 1 let alone even include it? Probably not. But it has gameplay so therefore I’m counting it unlike cutscene only ‘missions’. It’s a brilliant way to end a superb game but as a mission in comparison to all other missions? Expectedly it falls incredibly short…

2. Cortana – Halo 3 (3/10)

The flood guys who turn into different things are annoying enough with their insanely jittery movement and what might as well be an immunity to bullets, but when they transform into the guys who stick into walls and snipe you with highly damaging hitscanning BS? Well that just boils my jimmies.

Good thing this mission is filled to the brim with them then. The design of the level is ugly, the enemies aren’t fun to fight against, the level design likes to put you in bad positions where there’s enemies all around you and the retrieval of Cortana doesn’t feel nearly as special as it should. Get stuffed.

3. Midnight – Halo 4 (3.5/10)

It’s annoyingly hard, it’s full of Prometheans and it’s just such a slog of a level. Everything wrong about Halo 4 in one mission. Not a good way to end a game.

4. Coastal Highway – Halo 3 ODST (4/10)

Too much of a reliance on the AI to not be doofuses and too dull to not be mentioned. An imperfect climax to an imperfect game, but ODST deserved better than this.

5. Infinity – Halo 4 (4/10)

Inhale

6. Shutdown – Halo 4 (5/10)

It’s not bad. It’s a stand-out moment in the series for the gameplay alone, even if the level itself isn’t very good. It’s just painfully average and feels like a cheap Star Wars knock-off instead of Halo.

7. The Pillar of Autumn – Halo Reach (6/10)

What’s wrong with this level? Nothing, really. It’s a great way to end a fantastic game (besides obviously Lone Wolf). It’s just the weakest of all the Reach missions and I find it a bit frustrating at moments because of a lack of ammo for any useful weapons if you aren’t ultra
conservative at the start. The waves at the end aren’t enjoyable and there’s not much before it that’s all that memorable.

8. Kizingo Boulevard – Halo 3 ODST (6/10)

Forgettable tank section. Short, simple, uninteresting.

9. Halo – Halo 3 (6/10)

A not very enjoyable fight up nostalgia creek and then some boring wave defense against those awful flood enemies again. No wonder everyone goes and camps out near Johnson the whole time. What a snooze-fest. The ‘boss fight’ is brain-dead easy but all is saved by the kick final cutscene
and warthog run that echoes the original game. I could certainly have asked for a better way to end the trilogy but hey, at least it didn’t finish with Cortana.

10. The Great Journey – Halo 2 (7/10)

I’m sorry. Only one mention of Halo 2 and zero for CE but I find them both incredibly consistent. The closest exception is the final mission of Halo 2. Again, is there anything wrong with it? No. It’s just not as good as what came before, but it’s far from a disappointment.
