Introduction

Are you infuriated with the lack of clarity in Risk of Rain’s achievement descriptions? If yes, then look no further! This guide demystifies the implicit details surrounding the achievements, and provides players with efficient strategies for tackling each achievement.

Also included with each achievement is a challenge rating which defines how difficult the achievement is to unlock, as well as a value rating for item unlocks, which corresponds to the magnitude of impact that the item has on gameplay. Use these ratings to prioritize your achievement goals as you see fit.

For the uninitiated, the achievements in Risk of Rain are a core component of the gameplay. Unlocking an achievement grants you an additional class to choose from at character creation, or a new item to discover in subsequent playthroughs.

The cheesiest strategies have been marked with.

Item Unlocked: Lost Doll

  • Challenge Rating: 2/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 6/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: You do not need to deal the killing blow on a boss to unlock this achievement
  • Strategy: Damage the boss of the first stage on Drizzle until he is almost dead, then let enemies hit you until you are under 20% health. Now kill the boss.

Have 4 drone helpers at once
Item Unlocked: The Back-Up

  • Challenge Rating: 2/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 7/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Note: Can be any mixture of drones
  • Note: Drone count requirement is split between party members
  • Note: Drones last until they take too much damage, at which point you must pay gold to repair them
  • Note: Drones slowly regenerate health
  • Strategy: Drones are the little robots found on the ground with a light-green silhouette that cost money to repair/hire. Drones appear more frequently on Drizzle.

Fail a shrine 3 times in a row
Item Unlocked: Paul’s Goat Hoof

  • Challenge Rating: 2/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 10/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer

  • Note: Shrines are statues that allow you to gamble money/health for a chance to win items
  • Note: Shrine failures occur more often on higher difficulties

General Item Achievements (6-10)

Kill the scavenger
Item Unlocked: 56 Leaf Clover

  • Challenge Rating: 3/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 3/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Strategy: Scavengers are bosses that appear in the second half of the game. You will fight several of them on the final stage as they spawn rather commonly. Their damage output is rather low as long as you avoid their missiles, and most of their attacks can be dodged easily by jumping and moving left or right.

Survive 40 minutes
Item Unlocked: The Ol’ Lopper

  • Granted when the clock in the top-right of your HUD reaches 40:00
  • Challenge Rating: 2/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 9/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: Time spent out of combat still counts
  • Strategy: This will likely happen naturally on your first complete playthrough. If you find the game too hard, you can leave the game open and go AFK after you have cleared a teleporter event.

End a teleporter timer with 0 enemies on the map
Item Unlocked: Photon Jetpack

  • Challenge Rating: 7/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 10/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: More enemies spawn in multiplayer
  • Note: Highly luck based: enemies can spawn at the last second.
  •  Note: Unstable Watch stops enemies from spawning while active. Best used at the 84 second mark to prevent last second spawns.
  • Bug: Ghosts created from the Happiest Mask or the Jar of Souls will prevent this achievement from unlocking
  • Note: Drones and Filial Imprinting critters will not interfere with this achievement
  • Strategy: Requires a combination of skill and luck. After activating a teleporter, try to find the nearest single-level open field with the fewest platforms above and below you to hold your ground. Multiplayer is a viable option so you can mix classes that do Area of Effect damage with Ranged damage (such as Acrid and Engineer), but keep in mind that more enemies will spawn in multiplayer. The engineer is an excellent class for killing off-screen enemies and fliers with his homing missiles. The bottom left corner of the first stage: Desloate Forest, is an ideal staging ground for this achievement. The Unstable Watch is the perfect item to use in the last 5-8 seconds because it prevents enemies from spawning.
  •  Cheap Solo Strategy: Go to the secret stage, Boar Beach (see Secrets + Easter Eggs section for details). Simply activate the teleporter after killing all enemies.
  • Unconfirmed: The Imp Bodyguard created by the Imp Overlord’s Tentacle will prevent this achievement from unlocking

Die 50 times
Item Unlocked: Dio’s Best Friend

  • Challenge Rating: 1/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 6/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: Dying on easy counts towards this achievement, even though your death will not be recorded on the statistics page.
  • Strategy: Monsoon (Hard) mode will kill you quicker.

Find the bloated survivor
Item Unlocked: Dead Man’s Foot

  • Challenge Rating: 2/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 6/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: Cannot be obtained in multiplayer
  • Strategy: In the bottom right corner of the 4th stage – Hive Cluster, there is a random chance of a corpse being on the ground. Press the use/enter key on it and kill the archer bug that appears. The lowest area of this level is found by dropping down the thin holes in the floor.

General Item Achievements (11-15)

Obtain 7 Monster Teeth and 1 Guardian Heart
Item Unlocked: Alien Head

  • Challenge Rating: 5/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 10/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: Monster Teeth and Guardian’s Hearts can be bought from chests/capsules or dropped from bosses.
  • Strategy: It will probably take some time to farm this achievement. Farming Scavengers/Imp Overlords on the final level or looping through previous levels are both ideal ways to farm the required items.

Reach 650 health
Item Unlocked: Bitter Root

  • Challenge Rating: 3/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 6/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: Infusion grants +1 max health for each enemy killed by your party.
  • Note: You are granted significantly more max health on Drizzle (Easy).
  • Strategy: Find an Infusion item (grants +1 max health for each enemy killed by your party). You should have no problems reaching 650 max health by the end of the game, regardless of what class you choose.

Unlock a golden chest with the Explorer’s Key
Item Unlocked: Captain’s Brooch

  • Challenge Rating: 3/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 1/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Note: An Explorer’s Key is a usable item (infinite uses) that can be found in chests/capsules or dropped from bosses. It opens all chests on-screen when used.
  • Note: Golden chests can be identified by their large size, high price, and large skull on the front.
  • Note: At least 1 golden chest is gauranteed to spawn on the final level.
  • Strategy: The Explorer’s Key is not a common usable item, so keep this in mind while hunting other achievements so you can knock this one out when the opportunity presents itself.

Deal 5000 damage in one shot
Item Unlocked: Glowing Meteorite

  • Challenge Rating: 6/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 3/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Note: Cumulative splash damage from a single shot will count.
  • Note: The Gauss Cannon, nor the Lost Doll will help unlock this achievement.
  • Strategy: Acquire a Gold-plated Bomb (usable item) and advance through the game. When your rate of gold income makes acquiring 10000 gold feasible, farm over 10000 gold and use the bomb on a group of enemies. Keep in mind that the Gold-plated bomb takes a few seconds to go off and has a small blast radius; use it wisely.
  • Alternative Strategy: Reaching a high level as the sniper and using a fully charged Steady Aim + Scan can do over 5000 points of damage in a single shot. Just be advised that Sniper is the most difficult ranged class to play in Risk of Rain. The Gold-plated Bomb technique is easier if you can manage to find the Gold-plated Bomb.

Drown 20 Whorls
Item Unlocked: Filial Imprinting

  • Challenge Rating: 5/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 6/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Cuteness Rating: 10/10
  • Note: You must knock 20 Whorls (Nautilus-looking enemies) off of the bottom of stage 3: Sunken Tomb. The bottom-left corner of the map is the only area you can accomplish this.
  • Note: Can be achieved across multiple playthroughs (does not have to be achieved in 1 life).
  • Note: Whorls knocked off by party members count.
  • Strategy: The Enforcer’s Shield Slam is ideal for knocking whorls off of the stage. An all-enforcer multiplayer party is the quickest way to obtain this achievement, because more whorls will spawn with more players present. HAN-D also has decent knockback with his default attack.

General Item Achievements (16-20)

Bank 20,000 gold
Item Unlocked: Golden Gun

  • Challenge Rating: 4/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 9/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Double O Agent Rating: 7/10
  • Note: Gold dropped by enemies scales up with each new stage you reach, but it is split evenly between party members.
  • Note: Must be holding 20,000 gold at once. Spent gold does not count.
  • Strategy: Choosing to loop through previous stages from stage 5: Temple of the Elders is a good way to unlock this. You can loop through previous stages by pressing the use/enter key on the teleporter after you’ve cleared the teleporter event. Solo is ideal since you will not split the money you acquire.

Collect 4 Keycards
Item Unlocked: Wicked Ring

  • Challenge Rating: 4/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 10/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: Keycards are gauranteed to be found in the gold cylinder containers found in the final stage. They are also sometimes dropped by enemies/bosses.
  • Strategy: The final stage doesn’t usually have 4 gold cylinderical containers, so you will probably have to farm monsters/bosses to obtain the missing keycards.

Use a health shrine that drops you below 5% health
Item Unlocked: Harvester’s Scythe

  • Challenge Rating: 2/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 9/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: Health shrines commonly spawn on stage 2 – Damp Caverns, and on stage 5 – Temple of the Elders.
  • Note: Health shrines are removed from the stage when you activate the teleporter event.
  • Strategy: Easy to obtain, simply use a shrine that will almost kill you. You cannot use a shrine if you do not have the required health, so don’t worry about accidentally killing yourself. Remember to get this before activating the teleporter event!

Pass a shrine 4 times in a row
Item Unlocked: Snake Eyes

  • Challenge Rating: 3/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 7/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Note: Shrines are statues that allow you to gamble money/health for item rewards.
  • Note: Gambling shrines pass more often on lower difficulties.
  • Note: Imp Shrine successes do not count towards this achievement
  • Strategy: Roll the dice! Keep gambling at shrines and you will eventually unlock this achievement. This is best attempted on Drizzle because shrines will successfully pass more often.

Survive in lava for 1 minute straight
Item Unlocked: Fireman’s Boots

  • Challenge Rating: 5/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 8/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: The Bustling Fungus and Sprouting Egg healing items will not activate in lava.
  • Bug: This achievement is not visible from the in-game achievements screen.
  • Strategy: Do not bother attempting this until you have cleared the teleporter event. You will need a lot of regeneration and health items for this for this, so a second loop through the levels can help immensely. Best items for the job: Foreign Fruit, Dio’s Best Friend, Shield Generator, Tough Times, Colossal Knurl, Infusion, Mysterious Vial, Bitter Root. Class abilities that grant invulnerability such as the Commando’s Tactical Dive should be spammed because they protect from lava.
  • Unconfirmed: The shield generator will allow the Bustling Fungus or Sprouting Egg to activate in lava.

Commando Achievements

Available from start
Class Unlocked: Commando

Commando: Dodge 7 lethal attacks
Item Unlocked: Soldier’s Syringe

  • Challenge Rating: 4/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 10/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: Lethal attacks are killing blows.
  • Note: Can be completed across multiple playthroughs.
  • Strategy: Stone golems on the first stage inflict high damage (30+ damage) and are easy to dodge. Hurt yourself until you are under 30 health, then step near a stone golem to trigger his attack animation. Step away from him, and right as his hands are about to clap together, dive-roll through his attack.

Commando: Activate the 3rd teleporter without being hurt once
Item Unlocked: Hyper-Threader

  • Challenge Rating: 10/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 10/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Note: You must not take a single point of damage. Falling damage, using health shrines on stage 2, and Lost Doll usage will prevent this achievement from unlocking.
  • Note: You only need to activate the teleporter event on stage 3. You do not need to clear the event unharmed.
  • Note: Party members may take damage.
  • Note: Diving right before you hit the ground will cancel fall damage.
  • Preparation: Be sure to unlock as many of the following items as you can before attempting: Shield Generator, Unstable Watch, The Back-Up, Paul’s Goat Hoof, Photon Jetpack, Hermit’s Scarf, Alien Head, Wicked Ring. The Shield Generator is the absolute best item you could possibly find because it makes you invincible for 8 seconds, and recharges relatively fast. Items that increase mobility such as the jetpacks or the goat hoof should also receive top priority.
  • Strategy: Arguably the hardest achievement in Risk of Rain. Reaching the teleporter as quickly as possible is your primary goal. Only purchase one or two items on the way, but stick to finding the teleporter within the first two minutes of each level. Only buy drones if you come by one during the teleporter event with enough cash. Drones will sometimes absorb the shots from wisps which is very handy.
Combat Tips: Don’t even bother fighting unless you have to. Reach the teleporters first. After activiting it, you should constantly be running away until enemies stop spawning. If you must fight a Vagrant in the first stage, do not hurt her beyond 50% until enemies stop spawning because she attacks faster when injured. Colossus and Ancient Wisp bosses can be handled at long range if they spawned on a wide and flat field, but remember that the Ancient Wisp spawns smaller wisps on death. Magma Worms present the highest risk because simply touching them will hurt you small amounts. Keep as much distance between you and the worm as possible; Always have a dodge ready for when he swoops down. FMJ offers the most mobility so fire it as much as possible.
Multiplayer Tips: More enemies spawn in multiplayer, so protecting the commando is difficult. The commando should constantly be running or hanging from ropes/ladders, while other players handle the combat.
  •  Alternative Multiplayer Strategy: This achievement is unlocked for all players in a multiplayer party, so have a player with excellent reflexes play the evading commando. You could even have an entire party of commandos, and hope that at least 1 player reaches the teleporter of stage 3 without damage.
  • Ideal Stage Route: Dried Lake -> Sky Meadow -> Sunken Tomb.

Enforcer Achievements

Kill the Magma Worm, Wandering Vagrant, and Colossus
Class Unlocked: Enforcer

  • Challenge Rating: 2/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Note: Can be done across multiple playthroughs
  • Note: A friend in multiplayer may deliver the killing blow
  • Strategy: Simply kill these three bosses on Drizzle. The boss of the first stage will always be one of these three bosses (randomly selected). Subsequent levels have a smaller chance of choosing one of these bosses.

Enforcer: Block 2000 damage total with your shield
Item Unlocked: Spikestrip

  • Challenge Rating: 2/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 5/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: Can be achieved across multiple playthroughs.
  • Note: Blocking only occurs when you have your shield deployed.
  • Strategy: See the next achievement (Prescriptions) for details.

Enforcer: Stay in Shield Mode for 5 minutes straight (in combat)
Item Unlocked: Prescriptions

  • Challenge Rating: 3/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 5/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: Blocking only occurs when you have your shield deployed.
  • Note: You won’t leave combat as long as you have taken damage or blocked within the past few seconds.
  •  Strategy: Achieve this alongside the other Enforcer achievement. Simply activate the teleporter on stage one and clear every enemy except for a single stone golem with access to a step up from his left or right (He can’t go up or down steps, poor guy). Place yourself on the edge of the step above the golem, and deploy the shield. Make sure you it says “Blocked” every time he attacks. Leave the game running for five minutes.

Bandit Achievements

Beat the 3rd stage
Class Unlocked: Bandit

  • Challenge Rating: 2/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Strategy: As of version 1.2, the Bandit may be unlocked on Drizzle. Clearing stages quickly makes the game considerably easier, so if you are having trouble beating stage 3, try to play through the game at a quicker pace.

Bandit: Kill a boss with ‘Lights Out.’
Item Unlocked: Pillaged Gold

  • Challenge Rating: 2/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 2/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Strategy: Finish an almost-dead boss with the Lights Out (headshot) ability.

Bandit: Reset your cooldown 15 times consecutively
Item Unlocked: The Hit List

  • Cooldowns are reset by getting a killing blow on an enemy with Lights Out.
  • You may safely kill enemies with Blast and Dynamite Toss
  • Challenge Rating: 4/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 9/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes?
  • Strategy: Only fire Lights Out when you are confident that it will finish off an enemy. Be patient and selective about your targets. Focus on secluded targets. More enemies spawn in multiplayer, hence solo is preferred.

Huntress Achievements

Collect 15 Monster Logs
Class Unlocked: Huntress

  • Challenge Rating: 5/10
  • Game Mode: Rainstorm (Medium); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Sometimes
  • Note: Bosses also drop logs
  • Note: Monster logs obtained in multiplayer are usually shared between everyone connected
  • Bug: Monster logs are sometimes not registered properly in multiplayer
  • Strategy: Monster logs will only drop randomly from monsters on Rainstorm (Medium) or higher. There are not enough monster types on stage 1 to fulfill this achievement, so your farming attempts will require you to venture further to unlock the Huntress.

Huntress: Achieve 200% attack speed
Item Unlocked: Hermit’s Scarf

  • Challenge Rating: 3/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 8/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: Predatory Instincts, Energy Cell, Filial Imprinting, Soldier’s Syringe, Warbanner, and Prescriptions are all the items that can increase attack speed.
  • Strategy: A combination of the above items will gaurantee an easy achievement, so make sure you’ve unlocked most of those. In particular, Warbanner, Prescriptions, and Filial Imprinting will drastically increase your attack speed.

Huntress: Defeat the Legendary Wisp without taking damage
Item Unlocked: Predatory Instincts

  • Challenge Rating: 4/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 8/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Achievement Typo: The monster you must defeat is the Ancient Wisp.
  • Note:Avoid taking any damage from the Ancient Wisp boss. It is okay to take damage from other sources.
  • Note: Party members may take damage from the Ancient Wisp.
  • Note: Ancient Wisp is a boss that sometimes spawns on any variation of stage 2.
  •  Strategy: Multiplayer is the way to go. Simply have your teammates kill the wisp while you have a picnic elsewhere. If you must solo the beast, you can safely kill the Wisp from a distance without it attacking you, its range is rather limited. You can predict where its flame columns will appear by looking for purple sparks on the ground.

HAN-D Achievements

Find the Robot Janitor
HAN-D

  • Challenge Rating: 3/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: Must be found in single player.
  • Note: Has a small chance of not appearing.
  • Strategy: On the final stage, Risk of Rain – UES Contact Light, look for a tower of crates in the 2nd highest cargo hold, one of the crates will be slightly open. Stand next to it and press the use/enter key.

HAN-D: Kill 10 enemies simultaneously with FORCED_REASSEMBLY
Item Unlocked: Arms Race

  • Challenge Rating: 5/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 10/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Note: The damage of your abilities increases greatly as you gain levels.
  • Strategy: Fight for a while on the first stage in single player on Drizzle until you are a high enough level to kill lemurians and jellyfish with one forced_reassembly (level 8 or 9 depending on items). Now herd a large group of lemurians and jellyfish together and crush them with with the ability.

HAN-D: Stay above 70% health for 25 minutes
Item Unlocked: Shield Generator

  • Challenge Rating: 4/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 10/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: You must reach 25:00 on the clock without dropping below 70% health.
  • Strategy: Multiplayer is ideal, simply hang back while your teammates clear the level. After clearing the teleporter event, simply leave the game on until 25:00 is reached. If you are attempting this solo, just remember to use your drones liberally to heal yourself. Also note that your teammates will not be awarded the achievement if they remain.

Engineer Achievements

Purchase 40 drones total
Class Unlocked: Engineer

  • Challenge Rating: 2/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: Can be done across multiple playthroughs
  • Note: Repairs count towards purchases
  • Note: Purchases by friends do not count towards your total
  • Strategy: Drones are easiest to find and afford on Drizzle. When a drone takes too much damage, it falls to the ground and requires an increased amount of gold to repair. These repairs count towards your purchase total.

Engineer: Detonate 15 Bounding Mines within 5 seconds
Item Unlocked: Sticky Bomb

  • Challenge Rating: 1/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 6/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Strategy: Lay down 15 mines in the exact same spot, and let an enemy touch them.

Engineer: Kill a boss in 15 seconds or less
Item Unlocked: Concussion Grenade

  • Challenge Rating: 4/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 9/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Unknown
  • Note: Does not have to be the teleporter event boss.
  • Note: You do not have to get the killing blow
  • Strategy: Multiplayer parties can kill bosses faster. Bringing a sniper along is effective because he can potentially 1-shot the boss of Stage 1 with a fully charged Steady Aim + Spotter Scan. As the engineer, deploy all of your mines/turrets before or as a boss spawns. As an alternative, by looping through the previous levels from stage 5 you can amass an arsenal capable of killing bosses in less than a second.

Miner Achievements

Clear a path for the survivor
Class Unlocked: Miner

  • Challenge Rating: 4/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Note: Activating the teleporter event despawns The Direseeker.
  • Strategy: Go to the 4th stage – Magma Barracks. In the bottom right corner of the stage you will find a pool of lava. Jump into the lava and wade right. There is a random chance of a tunnel being open. Traverse the narrow passage until you encounter a room with an escape pod. There is a random chance that a boss will be here, kill her and you will unlock the miner. If the boss is not there, you will need to try again in a subsequent playthrough. The boss you must face is an elder lemurian called The Direseeker. Since you might be low on health from travelling through lava, try to keep your distance and kill her with ranged attacks. The chance of The Direseeker spawning is relatively low, so this may take several playthroughs.
  • Uncomfirmed: The Direseeker seems to have a much higher chance of spawning in single player.

Miner: Survive the teleporter event without falling below 50% health
Item Unlocked: Panic Mine

  • Challenge Rating: 5/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 8/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: You may drop below 50% prior to the teleporter event activation, but you must be at or above 50% health to be eligible.
  • Strategy: Multiplayer is easiest. Have your team members handle the combat while you flee. The miner has invincibility during his dash attacks, so if you must do this solo, you’ll want to utilize these attacks to handle large packs of monsters.

Miner: Reach level 10 without getting hurt more then once
Item Unlocked: Shattering Justice

  • Challenge Rating: 10/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 8/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Note: You must reach experience level 10, you may only be hit once.
  • Note: You are invincible while dashing.
  • Preparations: Be sure to unlock as many of the following items as you can before attempting: Shield Generator, Unstable Watch, The Back-Up, Paul’s Goat Hoof, Photon Jetpack, Hermit’s Scarf. The Shield Generator is the absolute best item you could possibly find because it makes you invincible for 8 seconds, and recharges relatively fast. Items that increase mobility such as the jetpacks or the goat hoof should also receive top priority.
  • Strategy: Arguably the hardest achievement in the game alongside one of the Commando’s achievements. You will definitely want a multiplayer party for this one. Run from enemies and hang from ladders/ropes while your team kills enemies. Learn how to time your invincible dashes so that you don’t take damage. This will become a necessity if a Magma Worm spawns. Use your 2nd jump to bypass enemies if your dashes aren’t available. Stick to stage 1 and do not activate the teleporter. You can reach level 10 on stage 1 with enough grinding. It is strongly recommended to bring an engineer because his homing missiles can eliminate jellyfish easily.
  •  Alternative Multiplayer Strategy: This achievement is unlocked for all players in a multiplayer party, so have a player with excellent reflexes play the evading miner.

Sniper Achievements

Beat the game
Class Unlocked: Sniper

  • Challenge Rating: 4/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Note: To reach the final stage, you must press the item-switch key on the teleporter (not the use/enter key) on stage 5: Temple of the Elders – Holy Grounds
  • Note: If you are dead when the final boss is killed in multiplayer, you will still unlock the sniper
  • Strategy: Drones can dish out ridiculous damage end-game. If the final boss gives you problems, try focusing your time in levels on collecting drones. If you press the use/enter key on the teleporter in stage 5, you will loop back to stage 1 with an increased difficulty and more items to collect.

Sniper: Achieve 20 consecutive perfect reloads
Item Unlocked: Crudely Drawn Buddy

  • Challenge Rating: 8/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 4/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: Perfect reloads are counted when you press the “Ability 1” button while the white line is hovering over the white bar. An extra loud *ca-shunk* sound will play when you do a perfect reload.
  • Strategy: Try to find a rythm. The white line always starts on the far left of the gauge, and the white bar is always in the same spot near the left. I suggest clearing the stage’s teleporter event so that you are free to concentrate and practice.

Sniper: 1-shot kill 10 enemies consecutively
Item Unlocked: Telescopic Sight

  • Challenge Rating: 2/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 7/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Note: Shots are counted as long as your shot kills at least 1 enemy.
  • Note: Other players may damage the enemy first
  • Strategy: Use nothing but fully charged Steady Aims on the first stage to obtain this easy achievement.

Acrid Achievements

Free the Chained creature
Class Unlocked: Acrid

  • Challenge Rating: 3/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: Must be obtained in single player
  • Note: Has a random chance of not appearing
  • Strategy: Found in the stage 3 – Sunken Tomb. Go to the top-right corner of the stage. The correct area is a dry area well above the water level, and you may have to travel left or travel in a clockwise circle around the stage to reach this area because the lower-right half of the map has no direct path connecting the upper half of the level. There is a random chance of Acrid’s cage being here. Press use/enter on the cage to free him, but be prepared for a fight. You must kill acrid to unlock him. Acrid is an easy boss fight because most of his attacks have a short range and modest damage.

Acrid: Spread 10,000 feet of caustic sludge
Item Unlocked: Toxic Worm

  • Challenge Rating: 2/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 7/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: No
  • Note: Can be achieved across multiple playthroughs.
  • Strategy: Use caustic sludge every time it is available, and cover as much ground as possible. It can easily be obtained in well under an hour.

Acrid: Spread Epidemic to 25 enemies
Item Unlocked: Massive Leech

  • Challenge Rating: 3/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 3/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Unknown
  • Note: A single use of epidemic must spread to 25 enemies.
  • Note: Epidemic has a long range and can spread between enemies that are far apart.
  • Strategy: You probably won’t be able to achieve this until later in the game when ridiculous numbers of enemies appear on screen at once. The spawning that will occur when hatches are opening on the final stage is potentially gauranteed to get you this achievement.
Mercenary Achievements
Beat the game 5 times
Class unlocked: Mercenary

  • Challenge Rating: 5/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Note: To reach the final stage, you must press the item-switch key on the teleporter (not the use/enter key) on stage 5: Temple of the Elders – Holy Grounds
  • Note: If you are dead when the final boss is killed in multiplayer, you will still get credit towards 5 game completions
  • Strategy: Drones can dish out ridiculous damage end-game. If the final boss gives you problems, try focusing your time in levels on collecting drones. If you press the use/enter key on the teleporter in stage 5, you will loop back to stage 1 with an increased difficulty and more items to collect.

Mercenary: Eviscerate 50 enemies
Item Unlocked: Chargefield Generator

  • Challenge Rating: 1/10
  • Usefulness Rating: 7/10
  • Game Mode: Drizzle (Easy); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Note: Can be achieved across multiple playthroughs.
  • Note: Enemies must be killed by Eviscerate.
  • Strategy: You should have no problems with this achievement. Eviscerate is a powerful ability that can kill low-level enemies easily.

Mercenary: Beat the game on Monsoon difficulty
Item Unlocked: Ancient Scepter

  • Challenge Rating: 10/10
  • Usefulness Rating: Variable; Dependent on class.
  • Game Mode: Monsoon (Hard); Solo or Multiplayer
  • Party Sharing: Yes
  • Note: Awarded to all players as long as a Mercenary is in the party.
  • Strategy: The key to beating Monsoon difficulty is speed. Beat levels as quickly as possible. Your first goal on any given stage is to find the teleporter as quickly as you can. After activating the event, kill monsters when you are sure you aren’t facing overwhelming numbers, and run when the odds are against you. When fighting, utilize all three of your abilities every time they are available. As you gain money from the teleporter event, you should buy items you come across while running, and maybe even spend 30-60 seconds after the event making a few purchases. Laser, missile, and flame drones are invaluable purchases on Monsoon because their AI doesn’t get them killed quite as easily as the other drones. Attack drones are risky investments because they will probably die. As long as your friends are competent, multiplayer is a good idea for Monsoon because you can split up and find the teleporters quicker.
  • Cheap Solo Strategy: Use the previous strategy in single player mode to reach stage 3 – Ancient Valley, and pickup drones whenever you are able to afford/find them. If the game gives you the Sunken Tomb stage, restart. From the Ancient Valley, go to the secret level Boar Beach(see the Secrets + Easter Eggs section of this guide for help finding it). Boar Beach is a rather empty level, and the only enemy that will respawn here is the easily defeated Toxic Beast boss (which will always drop an item). Farm Toxic Beasts for about an hour and you will be an indestructable typhoon of carnage. There is an expoitable spot you can safely stand and deliver damage from, see the screenshot in the Easter Eggs section for correct positioning. If you stand on the right edge of the block, you should be able to damage the toxic beasts with your sword. Exit the level, and you should easily be able to beat the game. You may want to enable Frame-skipping, because after farming for long periods you will probably experience huge amounts of slow-down.

Risk of Rain Secrets and Easter Eggs

Boar Beach
A secret level that can be accessed from stage 3: Ancient Valley – Frozen Tundra. In the top-left corner of the stage, there is a random chance of finding a picket fence with bushes in front of it. Stand in front of the bushes for a few seconds, then press up to enter Boar Beach.

  • Can only be found in Single Player mode.
  • A single unique enemy can be found here called the Armored Boar.
  • The Armored Boar drops the White Undershirt (M), a secret item that increases defense. This item is not recorded in the Item Log.
  • This area is a reference to the hidden area Pig Beach in the MMORPG Maple Story
  • Boar Beach can be easily exploited to farm a ridiculous number of items on any difficulty. Stand in the position in the following screenshot, and kill the toxic beasts that spawn to your right for items. Melee characters have enough reach to hit the beasts if they stand on the edge of the platform.

Tor’s Head

If you manage to collect enough jetpacks, you can use the jetpacks to reach an easter egg in the final stage (Six rusty jetpacks plus the Mercenary’s whirlwind is enough). At the top of the vertical shaft on the left-half side of the map, you can fly and grab onto the wires hanging from the ceiling. From there, jump and fly out of the open vent above. Walk left and you will find Tor’s Head resting upon a pillar.

  • Tor is a major character from the popular indie game Iji.
  • Risk of Rain’s art style is reminiscent of Iji’s.

Boombox Golems

After accessing the Cabin in the lower-right corner of the final stage with a keycard, you will see a big opening to your right, along with a cliff. Fall off the cliff and hug the cliff by pressing left as you descend. Use either a photon jetpack or a well-timed character ability such as the Mercenary’s Whirlwind to land in the narrow opening. Inside this tunnel you will find 3 dancing Stone Golems gathered around a boombox.

  • Standing in front of the boombox and pressing up will cause a chiptune song to play.
  • If you miss the jump you will be teleported safely back to the Cabin.
