Welcome to our Rocket League Grand Champion guide. A complete guide to get Grand Champion in Rocket League!

Dribble Mechanics

To reach Grand Champion you have to be consistent at 1 type of flick and have a good grasp of control on carrying the ball.
When carrying the ball you should have a vantage point that is on your windshield or behind your hood. Be careful because car hit boxes are deceptive to your car body. Once the ball is on the vantage point let go of accelerate to slow down or use boost to speed up. Using your brake will cause you to lose your dribble.

When dribbling you always want to carry the ball to the back post side of the net so you can see the opponents name tag and challenge. Be careful about driving straight towards net because you’ll lose sight of the opponent.

When an opponent challenges you you have 2 options flick the ball or fake it and drop it. The types of flicks i’d recommend are simple 45 degree or reverse 45 degree flicks. The basic dribble principles will satisfy GC game play.

Aerial Mechanics

Efficient aerials are essential in high level game play. To be faster to the ball you have to master the Fast Aerial.

There are 2 types of fast aerials, One for balls below 45 degree and one for above 45 degrees. When wanting maximum height hold down your jump button and don’t use boost until your second dodge. When wanting speed at a low degree ball boost through your first jump and boost through the second Dodge resulting in a fast low degree aerial.

Aerials also are affected by Air Roll. I recommend learning one directional air roll. How do you know if you learn air roll Left or Right? People are flip dominant so you tend to diagonal flip to the right or left naturally. The side you flip naturally is the side of air roll you need to learn. The difference between air roll and directional is the axis of movement. Air Roll controls the X and Y axis where Directional control X Y and Z movements, this allows for more precision. Air rolling through a hit will keep the ball closer and reduce power on a shot. This is why you see high level players stop air rolling before shooting to get maximum power. The phenomenon is called Knock back. To get GC make sure you follow the checklist, Consistent Fast aerials then Air Roll and Directional consistency. These are all the aerial basics you need for GC

Simplified Rotation

Almost every Game can get split into patterns of rotation and the abilty to stay spaced and fill properly is beneficial for perfect Rotation.

Generally, we wanna look at these 2 Ideas:

  • Backpost Rotation
  • Our role
  • Our teammates

Examples will be taken from 3v3.

Backpost Rotation-

You should always rotate from the back post side this allows for the most field vision and best 50’s on defense. This is the universal rotation in high level rocket league and simplifies the game. Rotating front post can make you awkward as well lose your 50’s and cut off other teammates in rotation leading to double commits.

Understanding your role –

  • 1st Man – The role of first man is to create offense.
  • You can create offense by passing to a teammate or attempting a solo play such as air dribble or ceiling shot. As first man your the closest to the ball and first to challenge/go for it. After you create offense you can add more value by rotating across the field and searching for a demo through rotation.
  • 2nd Man – The role of second man is to support first mans attack.
  • Second man can support attacks by being ready to receive a pass or supporting a missed shot or opportunity from the first man. This means you should play very centralized and behind first man to cover the most area to be the best position to follow up an opportunity.
  • 3rd Man – The role of third man is to maintain pressure and mitigate risk of counter attack.
  • Third man is a super important role in 3’s. Your job is to help your team stay on offense by playing a defensive role away from the play. This means don’t push up to high and challenge early. As 3rd man you can also see most of the field this means you can adapt your position to fix teammates mishaps.

Our Teammates.

Be aware of your teammates positions. In 3’s we want to create adequate spacing and create a triangle to cover the most field. Think of every Car having a bubble or radius which can cover some area of the field this bubble shouldn’t touch any other teammate that way you can set up passes and limit double commits.

Understanding Defensive Positioning

Defense is a saturated concept in Rocket League my goal is to simplify it and help you position better and make saves easier.

Our goal on defense is to protect the goal so we have to recognize the corner is a safe area. A common mistake is that we tend to protect our corner more than our net. Think of defense as I want to force my opponent into my corner and not I want to protect my net. This will help you play better centralized defense and make more saves and have more net coverage.

Also our defensive positioning in net needs to be looked at. Make sure we don’t rotate straight in or straight out of net. This creates a bad 50 angle which includes the opponent scoring. To make it easy we want to be parallel with the goal line to create a leverage and easy save. By doing this you manipulate your 50 angles and create better perception of the shot making for easier saves.

Understand the Decision Making Process

When do you catch the ball vs boom it?
There are Three good options every time.

1. Boom but only if you see that it will be tough for them to handle (High 2nd or 3rd)

2. Control and make a dribble or aerial play to advance (Opponent is far away)

3. Pass to teammate off their boom (Sees team in open space)

1 And 3 Aren’t always there. A lot of the time you need to do something with it (Catch and Flick)

Everytime its your turn to go for the ball you should first go through a thought process called 1v1 isolation. This means searching for a 1v1 or first pressure/challenge. Once you have isolated a opponent you can determine if you need to boom the ball or need to catch and keep possession. When the opponent is close you have to boom around them to a teammate or follow up hit. If they are far away you should catch it and keep possession and advance with your choice of mechanic such as a simple flick or ground to air dribble.

Understanding Compression

Compression means being to close to the play and cutting off essential angles that could result in a goal for you or an easy save that you missed.

Recognizing how close you are to a play is important. Using your brake is necessary.
Tap break or let go of throttle before important touches –

50’s

Clears

Possible Possession Loss / Gain

STAY GROUNDED! Using flips is the easiest way to get too close and over commit.

Also compression mostly happens as 2nd or 3rd man.

Staying available for the ball in unpredictable scenarios makes you a more dangerous player and can increase your ability to score and save goals. Patience is key!

Understanding Depth Perception

Stay Wide! –

Staying wide and working into the play allows you read opponents positioning and gives the biggest window for accurate ball hits and information.

In this example the blue line has the most info therefore the best read and decision for this play.

If you look at the pink line he becomes in line with the ball and loses the opponents positioning/challenge and the ability to shoot or go left.
