If you’re planning on playing Red Dead Online with your friends, then creating a posse will be one of the best ways to make the most out of the beta, however, depending on the option you choose, it may end up costing you a fee.

Posse’s are essential Red Dead’s way of creating clans within the online world and giving players the option to create a sense of identity, by choosing a clan name, emblem, camp location, and even selecting the decorations for your camp. You will even have the ability to change your privacy settings and friendly fire options.

How to Create A Posse

Firstly though, in order to create a posse, you will need to have completed the Online introduction mission Honor Among Horse Thieves. Once you make it back to the camp, you will have unlocked the option to create a Posse.

To create the posse, simply press the Left D-Pad and then selecting the “Form Posse” option in the menu.

Posse Options

It is here, that you will have the option to select between two different posse options:

Temporary Posse

A temporary posse is completely free; however, it will be limited to only four players and will disband once the posse leader quits the session. This option is great for casual players that simply want to play with their friends every now and then. It’s important to note though, that any posse stats earned during the session will not be saved.

Persistent Posse

A persistent posse will set you back a rather costly $200, however, it will allow up to seven players in the posse and will remain after the posse leader leaves the session, becoming available again when the leader returns online.

If you’re serious about playing Red Dead Online with your friends and want a way to keep track of stats, a Persistent Posse is well worth the hefty price tag.

How to Join A Random Posse

Don’t have any friends to explore the Online world of Red Dead Redemption 2? Well, you’ll be happy to know that you can actually join a random posse by navigating to the Pause Menu > Online > Posse Up.

How to Invite Friends to the Posse

Inviting your friends to your posse has never been easier, simply create your posse and then head to posse menu by pressing the Left D-Pad. Select your posse from the menu and then you’ll find the option to invite your friends.

Accept a Posse Invite

Press D-Pad Left – Invites and accept from there.

Leave a Posse

Press D-Pad Left – Posse – Abandon Posse (but this won’t let you leave during active missions). To leave during an active mission (e.g. if you joined into a session that you don’t like and want to quit out immediately), go back to the Online Menu and select “Free Roam”.

Shut Down Your Own Posse

If you’ve created your own Posse and want to leave it, press D-Pad Left – Posse – Abandon Posse.
