Beginner’s Guide to Simple Builds

“The Book of Warriors” is a fairly hardcore rogue-lite & battle chess game with a lot of rich content and mechanics. The game has many tricks and strategies, which can confuse new players when building their teams. This article will provide some simple strategies for new players, focusing on how to build an effective output team.
First of all, characters in the game grow outside of battles, so it is normal for new players to struggle in the beginning. You can obtain fragments from each battle to develop your characters and team. As a suggestion, new players can start by investing in each character’s level-one talent, as adding attributes is a practical way to improve your team, and it only costs 20 fragments, which can be easily obtained. For the team’s universal talents, investing in talents that increase money and talents that provide sigils for exclusive attributes after changing jobs are very useful for building your team’s abilities.

Next, let’s introduce some basic information that output teams need to know. Firstly, how damage is calculated in The Book of Warriors. The game calculates damage by subtracting the enemy’s defense (or magic resistance for Arcane) from our team’s Strength, and any excess is the damage dealt. Any sigils or talents that increase damage are built on top of this base damage. In other words, if the base Strength is high and combined with high damage bonuses, then the damage dealt to the enemy will also be high. For example, if our Strength is 30, the enemy’s defense is 10, and we have a 50% damage bonus, then the damage dealt to the enemy is (30-10)*1.5=30. However, if our base Strength is low, we won’t be able to break through the enemy’s defense even with high damage bonuses. For example, if our strength is 20, the opponent’s defense is 20, and we have a 500% damage bonus, the actual damage dealt will still be zero because (20-20)*6=0. Therefore, the first priority for any team is to ensure that their base strength (or Arcane) is high.

2. Critical damage is present in the game and deals twice the amount of damage. The value of critical damage is determined by the “skill” attribute and can not be dodged, so in order to build an effective output team, the skill attribute must also be raised high.
Considering these two conditions, it becomes clear how to build an output team. For physical output, start with a Swordsman character, and for Arcane output, start with a Mage character, as they both specialize in Strength (or Arcane) and skill attributes, which perfectly suit the needs of an output team.

As for the other two team members, beginners should choose a Priest, whose first skill is healing, and the second skill can either increase the team’s attack damage or reduce the enemy’s damage output. Other team members can be paired with a Tank/Boxer/Knight as support. If you choose Archer, Pirate, or Rogue, you can cultivate them as the second output position.

Next, let’s take a three-person team consisting of a Mage, a Priest, and a Knight, and briefly introduce the methods for building an output team.
Firstly, for character attribute upgrades, focus on Arcane and skill for the Mage. It is best to increase Arcane to around 25, and then invest in skill (because Critical hits are important). For the Priest and Knight, their main focus should be on increasing defense and health, with some additional attributes added as needed.
In terms of sigils, the priority for the build is to increase Mage’s Arcane value. Here are some simple and easy-to-use builds:
Increase Arcane with anomalies:

By using Ablaze Iteration in combination with Witchcraft, the Mage’s basic attacks can inflict Ablaze on the enemy. Each time Ablaze is inflicted on the enemy, it increases the Mage’s Arcane value by 3 points. If the Mage has invested in the second and third talents on the right-hand side of the talent tree, they can also increase their Arcane value by using Arcane Missiles to inflict Ablaze on enemies. This can be an effective way to increase the Mage’s Arcane value and boost their damage output.

In addition to Ablaze, the Mage can also use anomalies caused by terrain on the battlefield, in combination with the “Anomalous Resonance” sigil. The method is to have the Mage stand on top of poison/river or magma terrain to obtain a debuff, and then use basic attacks to inflict the same debuff on enemies, which can trigger the effects of Witchcraft. This can be a useful way to take advantage of the terrain and boost the Mage’s damage output.

Increase Arcane with buffs:
This build requires the “Luck Fairy” and “Sorcery Siphon” sigils.

The effect of this build is simple – every time the Mage gains a new buff, they will receive an Arcane boost. It is important to note that only gaining new buffs will increase the Arcane value, adding layers to existing buffs will not increase the Arcane value.
There are many sigils that can increase buffs, with Luck Fairy being the simplest. Other sigils, such as Priest talents (which can increase attack and defense buffs), can also be used to accumulate buffs easily.

For new players, both of these builds are stable and have low costs. By using only two sigil slots, they can steadily increase their base Arcane value. The remaining three slots can then be used to fill any gaps in the team composition. For example, skill-based sigils can be used to strengthen critical damage output, such as “Wound Laceration” and “Spectral Seer”. In particular, Spectral Seer can increase Critical damage output from double to quadruple, but it requires a high base skill value, as it will deal no damage if it does not trigger a Critical hit.

If the enemy has a high Arcane value, the “Blood Shaman” sigil could be a good choice.

When defeating enemies with high Arcane values, the “Blood Shaman” sigil can increase the Mage’s damage output by 50% of the enemy’s Arcane value.
If you want to enhance the Mage’s survivability, you can choose the “Arcane Seal” sigil, which can prevent the Mage from being counterattacked by enemies.

In summary, the remaining sigil slots can be filled as needed depending on the situation.
With this build strategy, the items in the game, depending on the situation, the remaining sigil slots can be filled as needed during battles. Therefore, items should be focused on enhancing the Mage’s survivability.

For example, there are two types of potions, one that permanently increases the maximum HP and another that permanently adds a shield, both of which can help the Mage survive longer in battles.

Branches can also be fed entirely to the Mage, allowing them to obtain a high base Arcane/skill value.

It’s worth mentioning the Codex of Valor here. Because the Mage is vulnerable to counterattacks, if there is a chance to buy a combat codex from the mysterious shop, it should be fed to the Mage to increase their atta
